The role of tank-treading motions in the transverse migration of a spheroidal vesicle in a shear flow

چکیده
The behavior of a spheroidal vesicle, in a plane shear flow bounded from one side by a wall, is analysed when the distance from the wall is much larger than the spheroid radius. It is found that tank treading motions produce a transverse drift away from the wall, proportional to the spheroid eccentricity and the inverse square of the distance from the wall. This drift is independent of inertia, and is completely determined by the characteristics of the vesicle membrane. The relative strength of the contribution to drift from tank-treading motions and from the presence of inertial corrections, is discussed. J. Phys. A (Math. Gen.) In press

The behavior of closed inextensible membranes in linear and quadratic shear flows
The dynamics of a spheroidal vesicle, bounded by an inextensible membrane, is analyzed in function of the enclosed fluid viscosity, and of the membrane mechanical properties. The two situations in which a bending rigidity and a shear elasticity are the potential energy source in the membrane have been compared, and the stability properties of quasi-spherical vesicle shapes discussed. The transi...
متن کاملNumerical study of viscosity and inertial effects on tank-treading and tumbling motions of vesicles under shear flow.
An inextensible vesicle under shear flow experiences a tank-treading motion on its membrane if the viscosity contrast between the interior and exterior fluids is small. Above a critical threshold of viscosity contrast, the vesicle undergoes a tumbling bifurcation. In this paper, we extend our previous work [Kim and Lai, J. Comput. Phys. 229, 4840 (2010)] to the case of different viscosity and i...
متن کاملThe lift on a tank-treading ellipsoidal cell in a shear flow
The lift on a strongly non-spherical vesicle in a bounded shear flow, is studied in the case the membrane moves with a velocity, which is a linear function of the coordinates. The magnitude of the induced drift is calculated as a function of the axes lengths, of the distance from the wall, and of the ratio of the cell to the solvent viscosity. It appears that the main mechanism for lift, in the...
متن کاملTank-treading and tumbling frequencies of capsules and red blood cells.
This study is motivated in part by the discrepancy that exists in the literature with regard to the dependence of the tank-treading frequency of red blood cells on the shear rate and suspending medium viscosity. Here we consider three-dimensional numerical simulations of deformable capsules of initially spherical and oblate spheroidal shapes and biconcave discoid representing the red blood cell...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional vesicle dynamics under shear flow: effect of confinement.
Dynamics of a single vesicle under shear flow between two parallel plates is studied in two-dimensions using lattice-Boltzmann simulations. We first present how we adapted the lattice-Boltzmann method to simulate vesicle dynamics, using an approach known from the immersed boundary method. The fluid flow is computed on an Eulerian regular fixed mesh while the location of the vesicle membrane is ...
